How to Run a Smooth and Effective Virtual Dance Practice
Coordinating a group dance practice is hard enough when everyone lives in the same city — but when your team is spread across different schedules, time zones, or countries, getting together in person can be impossible.
That’s where virtual dance practice comes in.
Whether you’re using Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, or any other video platform, virtual rehearsals can be incredibly effective - as long as they’re set up the right way.
With a little structure and preparation, a virtual session can be just as productive as meeting in person.
Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to hosting a smooth, stress-free virtual dance practice that actually gets results.
1. Start With a Small, Clear Goal
Virtual practice works best when the session stays focused.
Before you meet, set one simple goal and share it with the group
It might be:
- Cleaning the first section
- Reviewing transitions
- Matching arm lines or timing
- Refining formations
Smaller goals help the group stay aligned and make steady progress.
2. Pick a Leader for the Practice
A virtual rehearsal needs structure, and that starts with choosing a leader.
This person will:
- Guide the order of review
- Demonstrate or explain each section
- Keep the pace moving
- Bring everyone back on track if needed
A single leader prevents confusion and keeps the energy flowing.
3. Stay Muted During Instructions (But Keep Cameras On)
When the leader is guiding, everyone else should stay muted to avoid audio delays and interruptions.
A few key tips:
- Keep cameras on so the leader can see everyone’s movement
- Try the steps as they’re being taught so the whole group stays on the same page
- Make sure you have a strong internet connection
- Unmute only when it’s time to ask questions
This creates a smoother, clearer teaching environment for everyone.
4. Switch to Gallery View
No matter which platform you use, choose a layout that allows you to see the whole group at once — similar to “Gallery View.”
This helps with:
- Timing
- Synchronization
- Coordination
- Group energy
Even on a screen, seeing each other matters.
5. Make Sure Everyone Knows the Steps Before the Call
Virtual practice is most effective when dancers already know — or have at least watched — the choreography you’ll be reviewing.
Before the session:
- Send the dance videos to the group
- Encourage everyone to learn or watch beforehand
- Use the virtual practice time for reviewing and cleaning
When everyone comes prepared, the session becomes faster, smoother, and far more productive.
6. Break It Down, Then Run It
A clear structure keeps things easy to follow.
Try this flow:
- Leader demonstrates/ explains the section
- Group practices it slowly together( ask questions)
- Run it full-out
- Make quick corrections
This format helps everyone absorb adjustments and build confidence.
7. Keep the Session Short and Focused
Virtual rehearsals don’t need to be long.
In fact, shorter usually works better.
Aim for 20–30 minutes with one focused goal.
It prevents screen fatigue and helps the team stay motivated.
8. Send a Group Practice Video Afterward
After the virtual session, ask everyone to film a quick run-through and share it with the group.
This helps with:
- Accountability
- Spotting timing differences
- Seeing who needs support
- Staying aligned between practices
It’s a simple habit that pays off.
